Local Area

An ever changing landscape

The local landscape has been sculpted by generations of small farmers. The heady blossom of the plum trees in spring is followed by acres of cheery sunflowers, lush fields of tobacco and maize interspersed with pastures and woodland.

In late summer fields of wheat and barley ripen to a deep gold ready for harvest.

Small vineyards abound and are at their most spectacular in early autumn as the leaves turn to vivid reds, yellows and bronze.

LOCAL TOWNS

Duras is a mediaeval hilltop town dominated by the ancient château which hosts concerts and guided tours all year round. It is also home to three bars, three restaurants and a busy market every Monday. Being a popular tourist destination, a variety of outdoor entertainment can be seen throughout the summer.

Marmande is a thriving modern market town with a pedestrian shopping centre and three out of town hypermarkets. There are numerous restaurants and takeaways offering a range of cuisines from Vietnamese to Italian. Marmande tomatoes have long been appreciated all over France and the town holds a tomato fiesta in June and a weekly market selling fresh produce from the surrounding area every Saturday.

Monsegur is another mediaeval market town with a covered market square flanked by vaulted arcades which house three bars and two restaurants. It is home to a world renowned jazz festival each year when the streets are barricaded off and stages set up all around the town. Market day is Friday.

Many more towns and villages too numerous to mention have their own particular character and are worth visiting for a stroll around, a drink or a meal.
